A free tab manager can meet your needs indefinitely, or work well until your third project takes you past a limit. The question is what remains usable when your library grows.

Separate the ability to save links from the ability to sync them, recover unsaved browsing, or collaborate. A generous allowance in one area does not answer the others.

## What free use means in each case

| Option | Useful free workflow | What to investigate separately |
| --- | --- | --- |
| SuperCommands | Saved Sessions, Link objects, Notes, and command access | Configure backup; do not assume unsaved tabs are captured |
| OneTab | Save a tab pile and restore stored links | Current sync and backup options |
| Session Buddy | Local collections and tab history | External backups and history retention |
| Tab Session Manager | Open-source session saving and restoration | Automatic-save settings and optional sync setup |
| Toby | A limited saved-tab library | The allowance needed for all your ongoing projects |
| Tabme | Local saved work | Pro sync and web access |
| Native browser features | Groups, bookmark folders, and search | Profile, account, and cross-device settings |

For limits or paid capabilities, use the vendor's current plan page. Avoid treating an extension's install button as evidence that every feature is free.

## If you want to clear a crowded window

OneTab is a straightforward candidate. Save the current pile, label the group, and restore only the pages still needed. Check the [current product](https://www.one-tab.com/) rather than using an old feature comparison.

Measure success by how many useful pages you can find later, not just how many tabs disappear. If you save 100 pages under an anonymous date every day, a free tool can still leave you with an expensive retrieval problem.

## If you want a repeatable work setup

SuperCommands suits a set you maintain deliberately: the project board, dashboard, brief, and reference pages you need regularly. Create a Link object, keep a separate Note for the next action, and retrieve the set from search.

Its existing core is free with unlimited usage. That does not mean you should reopen the whole library. Keep a small starting set for the task, and leave occasional references saved until they are needed.

Local ZIP and optional Drive backups are described in [the backup guide](/docs/drive-backup). Those backups protect stored workspace objects. They should not be advertised as a replacement for automatically recording browser activity.

## If you frequently forget to save

A manual saved collection may be the wrong tool. Compare Session Buddy's tab history with Tab Session Manager's configurable automatic capture. These address the gap between what you intentionally saved and what was actually open.

[Session Buddy's backup instructions](https://sessionbuddy.com/backup-restore/) distinguish a backup containing collections and history from routine browsing. The [Tab Session Manager repository](https://github.com/sienori/Tab-Session-Manager) identifies automatic saving as a supported capability.

Test the configuration you will use. Open several ordinary pages, close a window, and check which record exists afterward. This is more useful than trusting a generic claim that a tool “never loses tabs.”

## If you prefer a visual library

Toby's [Starter plan](https://www.gettoby.com/pricing) lists up to 60 saved tabs. Decide whether that covers the whole library you intend to keep. A small personal collection and years of archived project research have different needs.

[Tabme](https://gettabme.com/) currently offers local free use and a paid path for sync. Compare the actual storage arrangement with your needs. If you work on one computer, paid device synchronization may offer little benefit. If you change computers frequently, free local saving alone may be insufficient.

## Check three things before committing

First, verify where the saved data lives. Second, make sure you can export or back it up without deleting the source. Third, reopen a small saved set after a browser restart.

If account creation, device access, or library size becomes a problem, identify that specific limitation before switching. You may need a different plan, better backup practice, or clearer naming rather than another extension.

Use native groups and bookmark folders if they already meet those checks. Add a tab manager when it solves an identifiable extra task. The [full extension comparison](/blogs/best-tab-manager-extensions-chrome-edge-brave) covers the broader options.

Best Free Tab Manager for Chrome, Edge and Brave

You have 35 tabs from a research project. Next week, you need to return to the five that mattered, remember the decision you were making, and add three new sources. Saving everything is straightforward. Keeping that collection useful is the harder part.

Toby gives you a visual place to arrange saved pages. SuperCommands gives you searchable saved objects and a dashboard you can arrange around the work. Choose based on how you expect to retrieve the research, rather than how many unrelated features each extension lists.

## Where the two workflows differ

| Decision | Toby | SuperCommands |
| --- | --- | --- |
| How you find saved work | Browse collections or search the workspace | Search a named Workspace or Link object; use a shortcut or widget |
| How you organize a project | Collections and spaces | Saved objects displayed in a Home dashboard layout |
| What to save permanently | A collection of reference pages | An ordered Link collection, with a separate Note for your reasoning |
| What to save temporarily | A set of tabs to revisit | A named Workspace representing a working set |
| What to check before switching | Collection export and account access | Local backup and the objects in the selected workspace |

A visual collection suits someone who remembers a page by its position among other pages. A named object suits someone who remembers the client, task, or subject and wants to search for it.

## The free limit matters when a collection grows

Toby's [current plan comparison](https://help.gettoby.com/support/solutions/articles/66000526654-faq-new-plans) lists 60 saved tabs on Starter. Productivity removes that ceiling and adds advanced search and duplicate removal; it costs $6 per member monthly, or $54 per member annually. Basic search, notes, tags, and collection sharing are already listed on Starter.

A 20-link collection may fit comfortably. Three ongoing projects with 25 unique sources each do not. Count the library you intend to maintain, including completed projects you still consult, rather than just the tabs open today.

Choose by the workflow you need. This comparison does not promise a SuperCommands free-forever plan, unlimited usage, or a confirmed public open-source license. A larger local library still needs clear names and maintenance; compare retrieval and backup rather than assuming an unlimited plan.

## Example: a supplier comparison you will revisit

Start with a reusable collection called `supplier shortlist`. Keep the suppliers' pricing, delivery, and specification pages together. Save a separate note called `supplier decision` with the question still unanswered: “Confirm whether the quoted delivery time includes assembly.”

In SuperCommands, choose **Link** from **Create**, select the relevant available tabs or enter URLs manually. Review the URL rows, name them, and put the most important pages first. These are the documented [Link creation steps](/docs/links).

Give the collection a Text Command such as `suppliers`. Open New Tab search or Webpage Search with the configured `Alt + S` shortcut and retrieve the saved item by name or its assigned Text Command. A shortcut is useful for a collection you reopen frequently; ordinary search is enough for occasional projects.

In Toby, maintain a collection you can recognize and revisit. If arranging pages visually is how you think through the shortlist, that interface can justify keeping Toby. You do not need to switch simply because another tool has a longer feature list.

## Adding pages and preserving context

Treat the permanent shortlist differently from exploratory browsing. Update the Link collection when a supplier qualifies. Keep an exploratory Workspace separately if you want to preserve a wider set of candidates without making the shortlist noisy.

Write notes about decisions, not just page titles. “Check warranty exclusions” tells you why a tab exists. “Supplier links” repeats information already visible in the collection.

SuperCommands Home widgets can show saved work and Notes together. The Home layout is separate from a Workspace URL-set record. Switching views changes the dashboard. Manage the open browser tabs separately when moving to another task.

## Switching without losing the original library

Move one project first. Export or copy its URLs from the original tool, open the destinations you need, and build the new collection from those tabs. Compare the saved destinations and names before closing the source collection. URL transfer does not imply that tags, notes, sharing permissions, or layout transfer too.

SuperCommands supports local ZIP backups and optional Google Drive backups in [Drive, Backup & Cloud Data](/docs/drive-backup). A Workspace is a local saved record with a name, ordered URLs, and launch settings. Launch it into the selected current or new window. **Auto-save Workspace** is off by default; when enabled for a running Workspace, it can update supported tab additions and removals. It is not automatic history capture for every browser window.

Local ZIP restore and optional Google Drive backup protect saved extension data. Drive backup is not live cross-device sync, and restoring a backup can replace local data. Neither mechanism restores cookies, account profiles, or unsaved form input.

Choose Toby when the visual collection is the part you rely on. Choose SuperCommands when you want to retrieve a named working set alongside the note that explains it. For a broader comparison, see [Toby vs OneTab vs SuperCommands](/blogs/toby-vs-onetab-vs-supercommands).

SuperCommands vs Toby: Collections and Local Browser Workspaces

Tab manager extensions help reduce browser clutter by showing open tabs, saving windows, restoring sessions, and searching across crowded workspaces. SuperCommands includes tab and session workflows too, but combines them with links, notes, snippets, screenshots, exports, shortcuts, and browser commands.

> **TL;DR:** Choose a tab manager if your main problem is open-tab control, cloud sync, or automatic session history. Choose SuperCommands if tab sessions should live beside a free, open-source, unlimited browser command workspace.

## SuperCommands vs Tab Manager

Tabmanager.io is a useful example of a dedicated tab manager. Its official feature page lists open window and tab management, search by title or URL, pinned tabs, sorting, domain grouping, duplicate removal, tab suspension, saved windows, session history, export, and sync.

SuperCommands is broader and less specialized. It helps save and relaunch sessions, store links, capture notes, reuse snippets, run screenshot and export commands, and search browser actions from one command surface. If the goal is only tab cleanup, a tab manager may feel more direct. If the goal is reusable browser work, SuperCommands covers more ground.

| Area | SuperCommands | Tab Manager |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Best for | Browser command workspace | Open-tab organization |
| Saved sessions | Yes | Yes |
| Open tab overview | Command-oriented | Stronger |
| Duplicate cleanup | Not the focus | Often included |
| Notes and snippets | Yes | No |
| Open source | Yes | Varies |

## Feature Comparison

Dedicated tab managers are built for active tab control. Tabmanager.io, for example, supports switching between windows and tabs, searching by URL or title, dragging tabs between windows, grouping by domain, discarding tabs from memory, finding audio tabs, saving windows, restoring sessions, and exporting or importing tab data.

SuperCommands is better when tabs are only one part of the day. You can save sessions and links, add notes, create snippets, run shortcuts, capture screenshots, export tables, download images, and open browser commands from the same searchable layer. It trades deep tab operations for a wider browser productivity surface and fewer separate extensions.

| Feature | SuperCommands | Tabmanager.io-style tool |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Save sessions | Yes | Yes |
| Restore sessions | Yes | Yes |
| Search saved work | Yes | Yes |
| Open tab grid | Limited | Yes |
| Drag tabs between windows | No | Yes |
| Duplicate tab cleanup | No | Yes |
| Tab suspension | Browser-dependent commands | Yes |
| Export tab data | Yes, saved work focused | JSON/CSV in some tools |
| Notes and snippets | Yes | No |
| Screenshots and page exports | Yes | No |

## Use Cases

Use cases make the difference clearer. A tab manager is strongest when the job is active tab control. SuperCommands fits better when a tab session is one piece of a larger command workflow.

| Use case | SuperCommands example | Tab manager example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Save research context | Press Alt + S, save a session, then attach notes and links. | Save the current window as a restorable session. |
| Clean a crowded browser | Save the useful session, then return through command search. | Group tabs by domain, remove duplicates, or suspend tabs. |
| Capture page evidence | Run c screen for a screenshot and keep the source link nearby. | Not usually a tab-manager workflow. |
| Export page data | Run dat for tables or dai for page images from the same command surface. | Export saved tab data when the tool supports it. |
| Return to frequent work | Use saved shortcuts or command search for sessions, links, snippets, and notes. | Restore saved windows or search saved tab sessions. |

## Pricing Comparison

Tab manager pricing depends on the product. Tabmanager.io lists a free plan with window manager, session manager, saved sessions and windows, session history, and basic support. Its Advanced plan is listed at $2.99/month billed annually and adds backup, sync, access anywhere, and priority support.

SuperCommands keeps its existing core free forever. Current core usage is unlimited across sessions, links, notes, snippets, shortcuts, screenshots, exports, and browser commands. Future premium features may be separate, but existing core features should remain free. That makes SuperCommands the better value when you want more than tab management.

| Pricing factor | SuperCommands | Tabmanager.io |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Free plan | Free core forever | Free essential plan |
| Current usage | Unlimited core | Free local essentials |
| Paid sync | Future premium may be separate | $2.99/month annually |
| Open-source access | Yes | No public source listed |
| Best value | Broad browser command work | Deep tab/session management |

> **Key Takeaways:** A dedicated tab manager wins for heavy open-tab control, duplicate cleanup, and sync. SuperCommands wins when saved sessions should sit beside links, notes, snippets, screenshots, exports, shortcuts, and open-source browser commands.

10 Best Browser Productivity Extensions in 2026

The best free browser productivity extension should reduce daily browser friction. For power users, that usually means faster access to saved pages, sessions, notes, snippets, screenshots, exports, and commands without installing ten separate tools.

## Quick Picks

| Tool | Free fit | Tradeoff |
| --- | --- | --- |
| SuperCommands | All-around browser productivity | Not a password manager or blocker |
| uBlock Origin | Blocking ads and trackers | Solves focus, not workflow |
| Bitwarden | Passwords and autofill | Security-focused |
| Vimium | Keyboard browsing | Navigation-focused |
| OneTab | Tab cleanup | Mostly saved tab lists |

## SuperCommands for manual browser productivity

SuperCommands combines manual browser commands with local Notes, Links, Text Expanders, Todos, Workspaces, and Web Clips. Tags, favorites, optional Text Commands, and Home widgets help retrieve saved work.

Open New Tab search, or use the configured `Alt + S` shortcut on a supported webpage. `Alt + S` is a suggested browser extension mapping and can be changed or conflict with another shortcut. The address-bar route is `c`, then Space, then your query. Select a result with the keyboard and press Enter, or click it.

For a supplier review, collect selected URLs in a Link, record the unresolved delivery question in a Note, and save an Article or Element Web Clip. Create a Text Expander for a repeated request; focus a supported web input, type `c/`, choose the snippet, and insert it. For evidence, select a mode and format in Screenshot Tools; table export operates on HTML tables and produces CSV.

Screenshot PDFs embed rasterized page images, not searchable extracted text. Image discovery/download does not establish conversion to PNG/JPEG, and dynamic sites or complex editors may need separate testing.

Local ZIP restore and optional Google Drive backup protect saved extension data. Drive backup is not live cross-device sync, and restoring a backup can replace local data. Neither mechanism restores cookies, account profiles, or unsaved form input.

Choose by the workflow you need. This comparison does not promise a SuperCommands free-forever plan, unlimited usage, or a confirmed public open-source license.

## Productivity Stack

| Task | Candidate | Boundary |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Saved project URLs, notes, clips, and commands | SuperCommands | Browser-scoped local objects; runtime parity across browsers not established |
| Keyboard navigation | Vimium C | Apache-2.0; navigation-focused |
| Automatic window/session capture | Tab Session Manager | MPL-2.0; dedicated session behavior |
| Self-hosted research archive | Linkwarden or Karakeep | AGPL-3.0; hosting/backup responsibility |
| Authored browser automation | Automa | Mixed AGPL/commercial licensing; inspect components |

An open-source stack still needs maintenance and may incur hosting or service costs. SuperCommands can reduce switching for manual browser tasks, but profile isolation, shared cloud libraries, and recorder/replayer automation remain separate requirements. See [browser automation alternatives](/blogs/browser-automation-open-source-alternative).

## Bottom Line

Use the extension bundle for supported manual browser tasks, and add specialist tools for recovery, collaboration, identity isolation, or automation.
